'황제' 로저 페더러(5위·스위스)가 내리막길에서 헤메고 있다.
페더러는 25일(현지시각) 스위스 그슈타트에서 열린 남자프로테니스(ATP) 투어 스위스오픈(총상금 46만7800유로) 단식 2회전에서 다니엘 브란츠(55위·독일)에게 0대2(3-6 4-6)로 무릎을 꿇었다. 
페더러는 1회전을 부전승으로 통과해 대회 첫판에서 탈락하여 또 다시 체면을 구겼다. 
자신이 7차례나 우승한 윔블던대회의 올해 2회전에서 당시 세계 랭킹이 116위였던 세르게이 스타코프스키(우크라이나)에게 탈락의 충격을 당한 페더러는 지난주 독일 함부르크에서 열린 ATP 투어 벳앳홈오픈에서는 준결승에서 114위 페데리코 델보니스(아르헨티나)에게 패하는 등 최근 100위권 밖의 선수에게 연달아 지며 내리막길에서 올라오지 못하고 있다.
윔블던 패배 이후 라켓 헤드의 면적을 90에서 98제곱인치로 늘려 변화를 시도했지만 별 효과를 보지 못하고 있는 그는 "허리에 통증이 있어 움직이기 어려웠다"고 말했다.
페더러가 투어 대회 첫 판에서 고배를 마신 것은 2010년 4월 이후 3년3개월 만이다.
페더러는 8월5일부터 캐나다 몬트리올에서 열리는 로저스컵에 출전할 예정인데 그의 부진이 언제까지이어질지 팬들의 이목이 집중된다.

도핑 테스트 거부, 트로이츠키 중징계
세계랭킹 53위 빅토르 트로이츠키(세르비아)가 경기에 져서 기분 나쁘다는 이유로 도핑검사를 거부해 징계를 받았다.
국제테니스연맹(ITF)은 빅토르 트로이츠키가 도핑검사에 쓸 혈액 샘플을 제출하지 않았다는 이유로 출전 정지 18개월에 처한다고 26일(한국시간) 밝혔다.
트로이츠키는 2015년 1월 24일까지 경기에 뛸 수 없다.
트로이츠키는 지난 4월 15일 모나코에서 열린 남자프로테니스(ATP) 투어 몬테카를로 롤렉스 마스터스(총상금 264만6천495유로)에서 혈액 샘플을 제출하지 않았다. 
트로이츠키는 이날 대회 1회전에서 야르코 니에미넨(39위·핀란드)에게 패한 후 기분이 언짢다며 혈액 샘플 제출은 거부한 채 소변 샘플만 제출했었다.
트로이츠키는 당시 도핑 검사 담당자가 소변 샘플로도 충분하다고 말했다고 항의했지만 ITF 재판소는 담당자는 그런 발언을 한 적이 없다며 트로이츠키의 항변을 받아들이지 않았다.
그러나 ITF 재판소는 그가 도핑 테스트 당시 스트레스가 컸다는 점을 감안해 형량을 낮췄다고 덧붙였다.
트로이츠키는 2010년 테니스 국가대항전인 데이비스컵에서 세르비아의 우승을 힘을 보탠 선수다. ATP 투어에서는 단 한 차례 우승했으나 꾸준한 경기 출전으로 랭킹 포인트를 쌓아 2011년, 2012년에는 20위권에 들곤 했다. 올 시즌에는 40-50위권에서 주춤하고 있다.

테니스 기대주 정현, 와일드카드로 투어대회 첫 출전
윔블던 테니스대회에서 한국 남자 선수 최초로 주니어 부문 준우승을 차지했던 정현(17·삼일공고)이 남자프로테니스(ATP) 투어 대회에 출전한다.
오는 9월 21일 쿠알라룸푸르에서 열리는 ATP 월드 투어(250시리즈) 말레이시안 오픈(총 상금 98만4000달러)대회에 세계랭킹 507위인 정현은 세계랭킹 44위 마르코 바그다티스(28·키프로스)와 함께 와일드카드로 참가 자격을 획득했다.
정현의 ATP 투어 대회 와일드카드 참가는 이번이 처음이다. 올해 본격적으로 시니어 무대에 데뷔해 그동안 ATP 챌린저 대회나 퓨처스 대회에 뛰고있는 정현은 성인들의 본격 프로무대인 ATP투어 대회에 와일드카드를 받은 덕분에 예선을 거치지 않고 곧바로 본선에 나선다.
정현은 2011년 오렌지볼 국제주니어 테니스 챔피언십에서 한국 선수 최초로 우승을 차지하며 주목 받았다. 이후 지난해 홍콩 F3 퓨처스에서 국내 최연소 4강에 오르더니, 이달 초에는 시즌 세 번째 메이저대회인 윔블던 주니어 남자 단식에서 준우승까지 거머쥐며 일약 한국 테니스의 새 희망으로 떠올랐다.
정현은 "말레이시아 오픈에 와일드 카드로 출전 기회를 얻은 것은 큰 영광"이라며 "윔블던 주니어 남자단식 결승에 이어 이런 큰 대회에 참가할 기회를 갖게 돼 감격스럽다"라고 전했다. 그는 "내게 굉장히 의미 있는 대회라 흥분된다"라며 기대감을 드러내기도 했다.

The Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur, an ATP 250 tournament announces that two Grand Slam finalists, the ever-popular Marcos Baghdatis and future star Hyeon Chung of South Korea, will participate in the US$984,300 tournament to be played at Stadium Putra, Kuala Lumpur from September 21 to 29, 2013. Baghdatis will be a direct entry whilst 17 year old Hyeon will receive the first main draw singles wild card.
Marcos Baghdatis has been ranked as high as No.8 in the world and has been a finalist at the Australian Open. The often smiling Cypriot is a favourite with Malaysian fans and returns to KL after getting married and becoming a father last year. He has won four career titles and reached another seven ATP finals.
This year Marcos has suffered with injuries to his foot and shoulder, but still managed to reach the semi-finals in Brisbane, beating Gilles Simon and Florian Mayer, and the quarter-finals at the ATP 500 in Rotterdam.
“Kuala Lumpur has been a special event for me and I have always really enjoyed playing there – the tournament fans and staff are so welcoming and friendly, just like being at home. When I was in the final they really gave me so much support, which I remember well, so I am really looking forward to coming back to Malaysia,” said Baghdatis.
Every year Marcos has played the Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur he has improved his standing – in 2009 he made the second round, in 2010 the quarter-finals and in 2011 he played that great final against Janko Tipsarevic.
Currently ranked 44, he has career wins over Andy Murray, Juan Monaco, Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick while in 2010 he had the unique experience of beating Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal when they were both No.1.
Hyeon Chung, who reached the junior Wimbledon final earlier this month, is already being tipped to follow in the footsteps of the current Asian No.1 and world No.11, Kei Nishikori.
“It is an honour for me to accept a singles main draw wild card into the Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur, an ATP World Tour event that takes place close to home in Asia - and one that has such a quality reputation amongst the players,” said Chung. “I am touched that my run to the final of the Wimbledon juniors has afforded me opportunities such as this and would like to thank the Tournament Director and IMG for supporting me. The experience will be very valuable and I am very excited.”
His run to the final of junior Wimbledon was shown live on national television in South Korea causing the TV ratings to soar, as he caught the imagination of sports fans in his home country. Incredibly the junior boys’ final out rated the men’s singles final between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.
The 17 year old right-hander is based for much of the year at the IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida and was earmarked for big results since the age of 12, when he won titles at prestigious junior events like the Orange Bowl and the Eddie Herr International.
Tournament Director Nick Freyer, of organisers IMG, said: “We are always touched when a quality sportsman like Marcos returns to KL year after year. He feels comfortable with all that we do for the players. The admiration is mutual, as for the tournament staff, it is like welcoming home an old friend.
“Hyeon is currently the 13th ranked under 18 player in the world and is certainly a youngster to watch. He is genuinely deserving of this wild card as we continue with our tradition of supporting local and Asian players. He follows in the footsteps of Kei Nishikori, and India’s Yuki Bhambri - who will return to KL play in the qualifying competition - and Jimmy Wang of Taiwan who have all progressed up the rankings since we helped them at a young age.

A number of wild cards will also be provided to local players with the names to be confirmed by the Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia and the tournament in due course.
